Erste Zoliner Chevra
Anshei Sfard |
The First Zoliner Congregation Anshe Sfard was founded in New York
City in 1901 by Jewish immigrants from Zolynia and some of the smaller
surrounding villages in Poland.
It has functioned as a religious and social support organization
for the hundreds of Zolynia Jews who came to America in the 19th
and 20th centuries. This landsmanshaft (hometown association)
also owns group sections in three Jewish cemeteries in the New York
metropolitan area. Over the years, more than three hundred Jews
from the Zolynia area received religious burial rites and are interred
in Society plots (for more information on these burial plots and
on the history of the organization, see the Research section).
Annual membership options begin at $10 (ten United States
dollars). Financial contributions to help support the organization's
activities
are very welcome. Among other activities in 2003, the organization
has made substantial contributions to a hospital emergency room
in Israel,
and has begun planning repairs and improvements to its New York
cemetery plots. Donations can be made in honor of relations or
loved ones
from Zolynia and its surrounding villages.
Please write to us for
more information about joining the Chevre Zoliner Society, about
making a financial contribution or about supporting the organization
and its membership in other ways.
